Areas of Expertise

Professional engineers are able to stamp designs of any nature.  They should not.  They are ethically obligated to focus on their area of expertise.  Lindsay & Associates limits it exposure by focusing on those areas with decades of unique, pioneering experience.
HVAC Design & Evaluation

Mr. Lindsay taught HVAC design at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was Executive Director of the EPRI HVAC&R Center.  He was the national spokesperson for the electric utility industry on the CFC phaseout, conducting workshops on refrigerant management plans.  Mr. Lindsay also specialized in thermal energy storage, conducting workshops and providing third party design reviews.

Advanced Lighting

Bruce Lindsay managed a performance contract with the City of Kenosha and Johnson Controls to evaluate, test and install ornamental LED streetlights.

Bruce also managed the upgrade to LED lighting in Brevard Schools.  This consisted of competitive pricing, training custodians to install, and tracking the lamps to avoid shrinkage.

Thermal Pest Management

Bruce Lindsay directed the deveopment of Temp Air's thermal remediation division.  This included developing techniques to heat industrial facilities to 50C  to effectively kill insects as an alternative to fumigating with methyl bromide.  The process was quickly expanded to address the pandemic of bed bug infestations.  Temp Air developed heating equipment and licensed hundreds of firms.  Bruce later worked with Therma Stor, which manufactured two different lines of bed bug heat treatment.  Heat treatment is the environment-friendly way to kill insects, nematodes, and other pests.

Funding R&D Programs

The energy efficiency industry has undergone massive changes.  The utility industry, fuel suppliers, equipment manufacturers, and regulatory agencies are attempting to cope.  We have successfully brokered partnerships with Gas Ressearch Institute to fund product development for Fulton Boilers, Thermo King, and Tecogen.  We similarly worked programs with Electric Power Research Institute and thermal energy storage manufacturers.  Temp Air secured multiple fundings through the Propane Education & Research Council.  More important than funding is the market support through these organizations members, with demonstrations, channel training, and rebates.

Distributed Generation

On-site power has been the Holy Grail of the energy industry.  It has historically not been able to compete with economies of scale from central station coal and nuclear.  However, advances in solar technology and dropping natural gas prices have shifted the economics.  Fuel cells, microturbines and conventional engine drive generators are now viable, especially with heat recovery options.  Solar PV panel prices continue to drop, to the extent utilities are rethinking rebates and net metering.  Bruce Lindsay directed performance contracts to install solar PV panels with the City of Racine and Middleton School District.

Market Research

Convincing HVAC manufacturers to develop new products requires compelling data on projected sales.  Convincing mechanical contractors to recommend the new products to longtime customers requires performance and reliability information. Energy efficiency contractors will not approve utility rebates without proven track records.  Lindsay & Associates have developed tools to understand the complexities of the energy efficiency market and define laboratory and field test protocols to accelerate the adoption and deployment of new techonologies.
